Splitting Up: from one newsletter to two
Hi there, data enthusiasts and design curious!
Quick update: this previously named "Figures & Figures" newsletter is evolving into two distinct newsletters to better serve your specific interests (and mine). Because sometimes, splitting up is actually the right thing to do.
If you've read what I learnt from Dan Mall last week, you know this was coming. It's time to separate my personal identity (and brand, and content etc..) from the studio's.
Here is what I'm proposing:
📊 How to Inform the World (formerly this newsletter)
This is where Figures & Figures studio will share its approach to transforming complex data into meaningful action. Drawing from our work with organizations like the UN and World Bank, each newsletter breaks down the strategies and frameworks that bridge the gap between data complexity and real impact. No default solutions - just proven approaches that make information work harder for your organization.
You'll get:
Resources for building data visualization capabilities in your team
Case studies that show both wins and face-palms
And zero suggestions to "just make it a pie chart"
Example of articles: The Process of Creating Data Visualization Guidelines, How Spotify Wrapped nails data storytelling (without a single chart)...
Because most of you have subscribed here when I wrote about those topics, this existing newsletter will become How to Inform the World.
I’ve archived most of my personal older archives from this Substack space, and duplicated them into the Information Design Insider.
Don’t want to receive this newsletter? Make sure to unsubscribe!
🎨 The Information Design Insider (The New Kid on the Block)
This is where I'll share the behind-the-scenes of running an information design studio - you know, the stuff they don't teach you in Tableau tutorials. Expect monthly doses of:
Creative approaches to data visualization that won't make your clients' eyes glaze over
Practical tips for growing your practice, whether you're flying solo or running a studio
Real talk about building client relationships, finances and all the things that don't belong behind a "gate"
Personal learnings from courses, work or life
And yes, occasionally strong opinions about charts
Example of articles: I had a call with design legend Dan Mall. Here's what he taught me about growing a studio, Taking a step back...
A choice for you:
If you're in it for the career insights and behind-the-scenes of information design, hop over to The Information Design Insider on Substack or on Linkedin
If you're here for the data visualization wisdom and impact-driven strategies, stick around - here - with How to Inform the World (or on Linkedin if it’s better than this email format)
If you're an overachiever who wants it all (I see you), why not both?
The choice is yours - no pressure.
See you in 2025!
